About this deal

From sex workers and thieves to kidnappers and killers, these Bridgets are young women who have gone from the frying pan of their impoverished homeland to the fire of vast North American cities. Our 'Bad Bridget' exhibition tells the stories of thousands of women who left Ireland for North America between 1838 and 1918, many of which found themselves in trouble and struggling to survive. While the Great Hunger of the 1840s resulted in one million deaths, this one murder encapsulated the stark choices facing that generation of Irish people in a one gripping story. I also loved that this book although historical and full of facts it doesn't read like an overly academic work and appeals to the public.

The show starts however with the bizarre story of a 19th century Irish conman who played a role in getting the church off the ground in the 1830s. A lively, entertaining, if also at times incredibly sobering read, Bad Bridget provides a richly evocative account of the experiences of Irish female emigrants who found themselves on the wrong side of the law in nineteenth-century North America.

Records relating to child neglect demonstrate views of accepted motherhood, and the various demands on women trying to keep their families together. In most of the case studies I found myself despairing at how easily these women fell into harm's way. Eighty-year-old Sarah King was brought before the Toronto court for drunkenness and asked the judge to sentence her to a few months in prison. The exhibition features almost 150 original objects from the collections of National Museums NI, alongside four bespoke scents, curated by AVM Curiosities. A former FBI hostage negotiator offers a new, field-tested approach to negotiating - effective in any situation. So often history books don't gain the recognition they deserve but I am glad to see a lot of fellow bookstagramers recommending this book and also it being including in some of the book festivals.
