About this deal

The cuff extends a good way up the ankle and there's a nice wide elastic gripper to keep it in place. I can't stand overshoes slipping down during a ride so this was welcome. The zip is moved to the side to keep it out of the way of spray and has a neoprene guard inside to prevent water from working its way in.I wore them on an autumn day when there was a lot of standing water from heavy rain and they were perfect at keeping the spray away without my feet overheating. Sometimes, kit makers will use a less bulky fabric for the uppers, one that’s typically DWR (durable water repellent) coated to repel water, and includes a breathable membrane. It’s an alternative to neoprene that’s lighter and less stiff, but it can lose its water-resistance over time and, unless additional insulation is added, may not be as warm in cold weather. If you're really mile munching during the cold months, look for something that extends as high up your leg as possible for extra warmth and the most tech you can afford. If you're riding a bit less outdoors and maybe just doing winter race series or fast club rides, a thinner option such as the Velotoze will probably cover it. Also, you’re going to end up walking in your overshoes at some point, and you’ll have to put a foot down at junctions or stops, all of which subjects them to wear.

Once the cold sets in and your feet start to go numb you are going to have an uncomfortable time whilst riding. If you're doing a decent amount of winter cycling investing in some cycling overshoes is definitely worth it and will help you stay a lot more comfortable on the bike. Overshoes will add an extra layer of insulation against the freezing wind and will also prevent rain and water from entering which will also slowly freeze your feet. If you're riding in foul weather conditions and want excellent wind and rain protection without the full bulk of a heavier-weight neoprene overshoe then the Fiandre is a solid option. For milder conditions where it's not freezing but there's plenty of road spray, it's the one I would opt for. Another thing to consider is whether to opt for overshoes with zips or velcro straps. Wrestling shoe covers onto your feet can be a workout all on its own, but well-placed zippers can make the process considerably more manageable. Carbon is a terrible insulator which, combined with the metal cleat screws, sap heat from your feet and leads to discomfort. Unfortunately, there needs to be holes in the bottom of your cycling overshoes to accommodate the cleat and heel pad, but in most cases the more of the sole that is covered, the warmer you will be. The Pro 2 is the range-topping overshoe from Spatz and stands out from others by its height. The overshoe extends up to around the top of your calf to prevent as much water from getting in from above and keep your lower legs warm too.Kevlar-topped neoprene is used for the ankle area and toe box to offer flexibility and durability, whilst on the inside, there's a thermo fleece-like fabric that is designed to breathe, whilst keeping your feet nice and cosy. You will see many British pro riders logging their winter base miles in a pair of Pro 2s. Putting on a pair of Pro 2s does feel like you are ready to go to war in the sense that you feel protected from the elements. Once you've done it a few times, the overshoes are on in minutes and putting them on certainly isn't a battle. I've ridden for over three hours in them in sleet, snow and sub-zero conditions and they performed brilliantly with my lower legs and feet staying warm. The simply named Endura Road Overshoe in Hi-Viz Yellow is another competitively priced neoprene option, one that has been a cornerstone of the Endura overshoe line for years. Look for a pair of cycling overshoes that feature a pull tab built into the heel to simplify the process. Velcro straps at the top cuff can allow you to tighten up the opening and help to prolong protection against water ingress, but its effectiveness will eventually deteriorate. How long do overshoes last? And, if you’re keeping it indoors, here’s everything you need to know about indoor cycling, training apps and the best smart trainers.

The Estremos use the popular Gore-Tex Infinium material on the outer panels to keep the wind at bay and a seriously plush Polartec Power stretch fleece on the inside. There are also reflective details and a bright red YKK aqua guard-sealed Zipper. Into the third hour of one ride, the rider whose wheel I was on had a poor mudguard flap which just flung water at my feet and left leg constantly and I could feel water breach my left Pro II after a while, but my foot stayed warm thanks to the neoprene construction. The Spatz are not totally waterproof but if water does breach them you will stand a good chance of keeping your feet warm. The majority of cycling overshoes are worn over your cycling shoes, most pull on after you have put your shoes on. Some go on before your shoes but most are on in seconds and are easy to get on with a bit of practice.
