Articulated shoulders allowed me to lift my arms straight overhead with only minimal bunching of the jacket front. This is great in terms of waterproofness, but a bit annoying when you have to take your gloves off to open and shut the zip and pockets. So it was good to see a jacket arrive with a claim to be as tough as the original Gore-tex shells with a few modern improvements added to keep it up to date. Montane have once again produced a high quality garment with excellent attention to detail that won't wear or break down easily.

A four-season shell for extreme conditions, it’s one of the toughest jackets on the market, made with 40-denier fabric reinforced with 70-denier fabric in high-abrasion areas: the shoulders, arms and chest. Featuring a helmet-compatible hood, zippers for underarm ventilation, and cleverly positioned pockets that offer easy access - even with a harness on.As a durable mountain shell that’ll take anything mother nature decides to throw at it, the Ajax looks and feels the part. As a winter jacket it gave us great confidence in its abilities importantly letting us focus on the task in hand. We do have other Montane equipment and clothing, so I’m hoping from the past experience and knowledge of the brand that I’ll get the same good level of longevity for this jacket. It breathed well enough that when my base layer got damp with sweat from skinning uphill, it dried out in minutes while I skied downhill. That being said, I’ve found there’s still enough room underneath for a base and mid layer combination without any compromise on articulation throughout the arms and shoulders. Do not use powder detergents or any products that contain fabric softeners, conditioners, stain removers or bleach as they will affect garment performance.
