About this deal

Light is collected through the telescope’s aperture and sent toward the next optical piece inside the scope. The larger the aperture, the more light is collected, which results in a greater image resolution. In a reflecting telescope, the light is then passed on to the secondary mirrors, then to the focal point. In a refracting telescope, the light goes from the main lens (aperture) directly to the eyepiece lens. I decided on the stunning Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) as my first deep-sky target with the RC6. The size and magnitude of M101 make this spiral galaxy a good fit for my full-frame DSLR camera. Historically, April and May are a great time of year to capture some serious light on this deep-sky target. The Celestron Omni XLT 102 is aimed at intermediate-level skywatchers, particularly those who have mastered setting circles and know how to use the right ascension and declination coordinates on the supplied high-quality CG-4 German equatorial mount.

So if your biggest question is, 'which type of telescope type should I buy?' or 'what is the best telescope in the world?' let us help. What types of telescope are there? It's best to have at least three good quality eyepieces that deliver low, medium and high magnifications — say around 50x, 100x and 200x. Taking as an example a 100 mm f/10 telescope, those eyepieces would be of 20 mm, 10 mm and 5 mm focal length. Let's assume that these particular eyepieces are of the commonly used Plossl variety. A field of view around one degree across (an area of 0.8 square degrees) is given by the 20 mm eyepiece — ideal for sweeping the deep skies and finding objects. The 10 mm eyepiece will just take in the half-degree diameter moon and have a field covering just one-quarter that of the 20 mm eyepiece. With its high magnification, the 5 mm eyepiece has a field of view covering just one-sixteenth that of the 20 mm eyepiece and can only be used when seeing conditions allow. How we test the best telescopesRefractor scopes are more suited to intermediate to professional viewers as they fall into the higher price range. One, use it for both terrestrial and celestial viewing. Two, the tripod is pre-assembled, making it easy for people like me who are really bad at DIY projects.

Celestron NexStar 6SEWit the Celestron NexStar 6SE's flawless optical coating, its ease of use and high-quality build, you have an instrument that is built to provide stunning views of the night sky for many years to come.★★★★½ The Orion Skyline 6-inch telescope is a fantastic choice for beginner and intermediate astronomers due to its easy-to-use nature and high-quality optics.

As a guide, your highest power eyepiece should deliver a magnification double the telescope's aperture in millimeters — for example, 200x on a 100 mm telescope, 400x on a 200 mm telescope, and so on. StarSense Explorer uses patent-pending technology and your smartphone to determine exactly where the telescope is pointed in the night sky. A Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA), like the ones satellites use in orbit to correctly orient themselves, helps the app match star patterns it detects overhead to its internal database. The iOptron Photron RC6 telescope was a pleasure to use, and provided the deep-sky results I was looking for. The optical quality of the Ritchey-Chrétien design produced flat, coma and chromatic-free results as advertised. Surprisingly, this F/9 focal ratio did not reduce the amount of light collected in my image subs the way I expected. 3-minute exposures at ISO 1600 were well exposed, likely due to the increased 150mm aperture of the telescope. After 3 to 5 years of moderate use, you can wash the mirrors properly with water and soap after dismantling them from the tube. Or maybe you shouldn’t even wash them. These are a heavy-duty, very durable, and tough piece of engineering, just don’t put too much dust on them. Also, the aluminized surfaces of a reflector’s mirrors may need to be sent off for recoating every 20 years or so, more frequently if you live in a high humidity environment, near the sea or badly air-polluted urban area. The Reflector Telescope Price Range Removing some harsh gradients in the final image was the biggest obstacle. I used a Photoshop technique that included applying a synthetic flat frame and setting the blending mode to subtract. This can be a helpful strategy to use when the Gradient Xterminator plugin does not produce the results you’re looking for. As always, adding more overall exposure time and improving the signal-to-noise ratio would improve the quality of this image immensely. Portability and weight– When you are buying bigger scopes, you must think of portability. This doesn’t affect the viewing quality but can affect your willingness to go out and use it. That’s why sometimes you should pay 20 to 30 percent more for a more compact Dobsonian reflector telescope. Of course, the Schmidt-Cassegrain optical system offers bright, sharp views with StarBright XLT optical coatings—a great choice for visual observers and budding astroimagers alike. The six inch telescope (150 mm Reflector) is a good size for beginners to the hobby of astronomy. You get some good light gathering power at a very reasonable cost. And, if you are a bit more serious about astronomy, or already have a telescope and you want to upgrade the six inch size also offers you some good choices. Let me explain further.

Aligning the Skymax 127 is a simple process, but beginners may need some practice to get it just right. We recommend becoming familiar with the telescope before dark by reading the manual from cover to cover. Celestron Advanced VX 8 EdgeHD Intended for serious amateurs, this optically excellent telescope is suitable for all types of visual astronomy with its rugged, lightweight computerized mount. If you know the sky and plan to be doing astronomy for a long time, this is the telescope to get. ★★★★½ It also means that your telescope will be quite large and heavy which means it’ll be harder and take longer to set up.

Final Thoughts

Image celestial or terrestrial objects with this smartphone adapter! The Astro Fi has an smartphone adapter to capture great images of the Moon, planets, and terrestrial targets like birds and wildlife. With its light, rigid frame, this accessory allows you to connect any smartphone to any telescope eyepiece with an outside diameter of 45mm or smaller. This smartphone adapter installs easily over the top of an eyepiece while bungee cords securely hold your phone in position so you can snap images or video. While the vast majority of smartphones can be used with the case on, some very large and/or bulky phone cases (such as folio style cases) may need to be removed for the phone to fit in the adapter. There are two common types of reflector telescope — the Newtonian and the Dobsonian. The way these instruments operate is the same — they both use mirrors to reflect light to create an image of the object you're looking at. Celestron NexStar Evolution 9.25A fantastic telescope suited to experienced and passionate skywatchers, with a price tag to match. It's not the easiest to transport, but we think it's one of the best GoTo telescopes you can buy★★★★½ The refractor has a fairly straightforward design, with a main objective lens at one end and a star diagonal with a threaded eyepiece at the other. Being intuitive to use, the refractor is often a popular instrument for novice astronomers, given their low maintenance. Refractors are usually affixed to a simple alt-azimuth mount, that slews from side to side and up and down to locate a desired target. Being easy to use means these telescopes are also simple to manufacture (at least for novice models) and, therefore, cheaper to buy. The Celestron Inspire 100AZ is an excellent telescope for beginners and the budget-conscious. It comes with a variety of accessories, providing great value for its price. It's also sturdily built and equipped with user-friendly features, making it a breeze to use.
