Verdict: Ravensburger’s Villainous range is a great bridge between more serious European-style board games and child friendly options, with the familiar characters of Disney, Marvel and - now - Star Wars making for a gentle start to more hard-core gaming.

This is a palette cleanser game. If you join regular game nights this is basically what you play at the beginning while waiting for a takeaway to arrive or at the end when people aren’t quite ready to leave but aren’t ready to sit for another hour. We especially loved: Because it’s divided into chapters it can be played over a few nights. We took it on a weekend away and played two chapters a night and it added a real sense of occasion to the game as well as making it feel more manageable for everyone.

It’s played speedily and is really fun - although to get the most out of all the references you need to have watched Ted Lasso (in fact you should just do that anyway). The premise: The ultimate movie game for movie buffs, using streamed clips of classic movies of all genres that can be played through your TV or tablet/phone device. Also - and let’s face it, this is a massive perk during the festive season - my six-year-old was able to set this up and play it with his friends without adult intervention, leaving us some time to do something else. Verdict: If, like us, you’re big film fans this might be the ultimate casual game this Christmas. Getting the game to work was a bit fiddly to start - I tried streaming it direct to our Samsung smart TV but found in the end the least glitchy option was to run it on a phone and cast it using Google Smart View. The innovative game is built on a cloud platform, allowing access across all devices with internet access, including TV, tablet and mobile and regularly refreshing content with the latest pop culture moments for a unique gameplay experience every time. A lovely game to get everyone in the Christmas spirit, ideal for all ages and with a good dusting of Disney magic on top. But once it was working this was a blast all round. The questions were a good mixture of movie trivia, observation and film knowledge and there were a wide range of films chosen from The Goonies and Fast Times at Ridgemont High to the latest Jurassic World film. Zatu has an excellent range of games and for most of them the best prices too. Delivery is always fast and I have never received a game in bad condition. 10/10 would recommend. Verdict: If as a parent you've been putting in the hours playing Orchard Games in the hope to indoctrinate your children in the joy of gaming then this is the ideal next step. Pull puzzle pieces from the bag and work to put them together to recreate six separate jigsaws.

Of all the games we tested with younger family members this was by far the most popular with all ages. Verdict: For many of us the film of The Wizard of Oz is a Christmas staple and this beautifully designed and well-thought out co-operative board game could easily become another family festive tradition.
