With over 200 photographs the exhibition revolves around two themes: images of landscape settings, and of indigenous peoples. But Salgado – who with his wife, Lélia, has turned the family farm in Aimorés into a nature reserve that’s a model of reforestation – shows there is still much to fight for. The modern world, for all its rapacity, has only destroyed “a little bit of the periphery. The heart is there yet. Ubicato a circa 400 chilometri a nord di Manaus, la sua aspra morfologia è perlopiù frutto dei tepui ivi presenti e, sebbene raggiunga un’altezza massima di 1.700 metri, s’impone con forza nella giungla circostante. Nello stesso luogo si trovano anche le più alte cascate del Brasile, El Dorado e Desabamento, le cui acque precipitano per 360 metri lungo il versante spoglio di una montagna.

Al centro della mostra gli ospiti trovano tre alloggiamenti che rappresentano le case indigene chiamate “ocas”. Insieme, questi spazi espongono 100 fotografie delle popolazioni dell’Amazzonia, insieme a interviste video dei leader indigeni. Questa parte è dedicata a 12 gruppi indigeni che Salgado ha immortalato nei suoi numerosi viaggi: Awa-Guajá, Marubo, Korubo, Waurá, Kamayurá, Kuikuro, Suruwahá, Asháninka, Yawanawá, Yanomami, Macuxi and Zo’é. From images of lush rainforests taken from river boats and sweeping aerial shots of immense waterfalls and stormy skies to portraits of the diverse indigenous communities that call this special part of the world home, Amazônia offers visitors the opportunity to see this unique environment through the lens of one of the most eminent photographers working today. This talk took place earlier this year as part of Photo London’s Book Club live events, to coincide with the UK launch of Salgado’s ‘Amazônia’ book published by TASCHEN. That riverboat journey was an attempt – doomed as it turned out – to find the source of one of Amazônia’s rivers, as well as a chance to take photographs of riverbanks that look like huge walls of trees. But to reach his ultimate destination, the communities who live deep in the forest, Salgado needed to navigate smaller streams in narrower boats. His book contains a shot of 10 or so small vessels moored at daybreak: dark and sharply focused, they stand out from the misty, featureless landscape behind, their seats catching the morning sun and shining silver. Whose are they? Manda Yawanawá, the daughter of Jeré Yawanawá, from the village of Escondido, Rio Gregório Indigenous Territory, state of Acre, Brazil, 2016. The Yawanawá community, which had only 120 members in the 1970s, has been able to rebuild itself and reconnect with the knowledge of the elders.

To restore this land which had been degraded by erosion, the couple established a reforestation programme in Minas Gerais state, planting three million trees in twenty years.
