About this deal

The ratio between the horizontal and the vertical side of the display. Some of the standard and widely used aspect ratios are 4:3, 5:4, 16:9 and 16:10. This Sony TV is compatible with AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. iOS 12.2 or later or macOS 10.14.4 or later is required. Apple ID account required. Subscriptions may be required to access certain content. Sony’s XR engine is extremely effective at upscaling HD sources, too. This was always a strong component of the X1 Ultimate engine, but if anything it’s even better on the A90J thanks to the way the new processor is able to detect and subtly distinguish the most important parts of an HD image, helping the object-based upscaling system deliver even more natural, three-dimensional results. The screen can dim a little where static image elements appear, for a protracted time, which can be noticeable when gaming. Though not to a degree where I felt it was really letting a game down. The maximum number of colors, which the display is able to reproduce, depends on the type of the panel in use and color enhancing technologies like FRC. Three-way stand is only available on the 85” Class model. 75” Class and 65” Class models have two-way stand with standard and raised positions. Actual look may differ depending on TV size and type of cables used.

The A90J’s glistening array of picture triumphs make it an excellent gaming display, too. The combination of high contrast, rich colours, good detailing and, by OLED standards, impressive brightness are all perfectly suited to today’s HDR gaming worlds, and the screen feels suitably responsive in its Game mode. The ultra-crisp and smooth majesty of 4K 120Hz gaming is also impeccably delivered.

It competes with the G1 from LG and the Panasonic JZ1500 in those terms and offers excellent performance We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for two months in our Accelerated Longevity Test. The amount of times the TV keeps pointing out that a particular picture quality change might impact power consumption is quite infuriating too - though I guess this affects me as someone testing the TV’s features out much more than it would a regular user, who’s unlikely to change picture settings all that often. Updated to Test Bench 1.7 with an updated HDR Brightness test that better reflects real world usage. We've also split the console compatibility boxes into separate PS5 Compatibility and Xbox Series X|S Compatibility tests. You can see our full changelog here.

Moving to the new Google TV smart TV software makes the A90J easier to use than Sony’s previous Android TVs. The onscreen interface is more friendly, customisable and reflective of how people are using TV features nowadays.

IMAX Enhanced content enables full IMAX Enhanced experience with compatible streaming services such as Fandango Now (US only) and BRAVIA CORE, or compatible content device connected via HDMI input (sold separately). Moving to the gaming performance and with the Xbox Series X and PS5, we didn’t really run into any issues with the A90J picture performance. Game mode allows full chroma, and HDR is also strong with most titles we tried, but that will come down to individual games at times and how you set up the console. We didn’t encounter any major issues with image quality and the input lag came in at 16ms with a 4K 60P signal. Converted to Test Bench 1.10. With this update we've revamped our Gradient testing, added a new test for Low Quality Content Smoothing, and expanded our Audio Passthrough testing. The new processor also contributes to picture processing with other technologies that use Cognitive Processing, such as XR TRILUMINOUS PRO which creates accurate colour gamuts for SDR and HDR content. There’s also XR Upscaling technology that now employs two databases instead of the one used by the X1 Ultimate chip last year. The entire picture processing engine is now optimised within the XR chip, resulting in better picture sharpness, scaling, motion, and more. We certainly put all of that to the test in this review. The actuators serve a much more immersive purpose than simply providing crisp sound. The sounds they generate seem to come directly from the screen, rather than simply the general area of the TV. The result is audio that better matches exactly what you’re watching, and a capable center channel that can be integrated into a surround sound system.

Sony additionally claims for the new XR engine general improvements in contrast, colour, motion and the upscaling of sub-4K sources. Particularly intriguing on the colour front is Sony’s claim that its new processor works equally on the red, green and blue colour elements, rather than just manipulating the white element that’s so key to affordable OLED technology. This should hopefully mean that the A90J’s colours don’t become desaturated by the extra injection of brightness they’re getting. x 2,160 pixels. Game title supporting 4K/120fps required. Game title supporting VRR required. Results may vary depending on the game you're playing. If enabling VRR results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn it off at any time. With XR Contrast Booster bright areas are brighter and dark areas darker, so no more details overwhelmed by shadow or lost in blown-out highlights. Enjoy beautiful pictures from any angle with X-Wide Angle.

As well as objectively giving you a much more HDR experience that even holds up with very aggressively mastered HDR titles, the extra full screen brightness the 65A90J can deliver ensures that you also experience way more of that natural, real world experience that HDR is at heart all about. There can also be a little more colour banding in bright, relatively uniform areas of colour when gaming in HDR than I customarily see, and the approach Sony takes to accuracy with its Cinema picture mode sees it clipping detail quite substantially out of the brightest HDR picture areas. The Sony A90J can nearly take full advantage of the Xbox Series S|X consoles. It only supports Dolby Vision gaming at 60Hz, not at 120Hz, though, and the TV doesn't support 1440p @ 120Hz. After a firmware update to version PKG6.5660.0668NAA, the TV now supports both VRR and ALLM. The Sony A90J is the high-end Master Series OLED TV for 2021 and it offers new image processing and better brightness for more realistic and accurate HDR picture quality. The new panel has a Laminate aluminium heatsink as part of the XR OLED Contrast Pro technology and this helps dissipate heat away from the panel while boosting the brightness capabilities. Added to this is a change to how the pixel emits light and, where other manufacturers use the white pixel to achieve this on its own, the Sony approach also adds the red, green and blue pixels to the white to increase the brightness of the colours at the same time. This helps keep the colours looking purer without wash out at higher peak brightness. The XR processor also adds tone mapping that pushes accuracy to the standards and retains detail in the brighter reaches of the HDR image and it also tries to replicate the master monitors that Sony produces for the professional market, like the BVM-300. Overall, though, the A90J sounds better than you’ve a right to expect with such a beautifully designed screen. Sony A90J review: Design and usability

This includes, in particular, figuring out where the focal points of images are and gently enhancing their relative presence in the overall picture. We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for four months in our Accelerated Longevity Test.
