About this deal

The versatile and compact Nikon ES-2 Film Digitising Kit enables you to convert film originals into high-resolution digital files. Purpose-built to pair with select Nikon cameras, this intelligently designed adapter converts 35 mm negatives and slides by fitting on the front of a camera lens and re-photographing films with sharp clarity and colour accuracy. ES-2 with moderately adjustable spacer on a 60mm G. The slide holder is "push-pull" type as on old slide projectors before slide trays an semi AF focus slide projectors arrived. The ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter can be used with the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED Lens, the AF Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8D Lens, and the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens. Adapter rings are included with the ES-2 for use when attaching it to the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED Lens or the AF-Micro NIKKOR f/2.8D Lens. When used with the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens no adapter ring is needed." Well fortunately I do have both a 60 AFD and a 60 AFS, which was why I gained interest in the ES-2. I don't have a D850 so conversion will have to be in post. If you have a lot of film/slides to scan and do not want to spend your life doing it, nothing beats the efficiency and quality of an "ancient" Nikon LS-5000 or equivalent scanner.

I have the ES-1 and just got the ES-2. I have a D850. I also have the 55mm AIS f/3.5 macro lens. It's an old lens and I worry that the newer 60mm might be better, though looking at the images I can't complain. Unlike the Nikon ES-1, the ES-2 doesn’t hold slides directly within it. Instead, a slide holder or film holder is used. The slide holder is capable of holding two mounted slides side by side while the film holder is designed to hold strips of up to six frames of film.

There’s a zoom mechanism built into the ES-2 Adapter that allows you to adjust the framing of the slide. With the 60mm f/2.8G ED lens on the D850, I found that this had to be around its shortest point for the slide to fill the frame.

You can feel when the holders are in the right position as they are slid into the ES-2. However, you may need to adjust their angle a little to get the film/slide square in the viewfinder. When using this adapter with Nikon D850, the Nikon ES-2 can work well with the camera’s Negative Digitizer mode and automatic colour reversal ability that helps in faster processing and rendering of negatives or slides. With the 60mm D an extra Adapter B adds a second additional extension as this lens has a greater working distance than the 60mm AF-S. You could, if need be shoot the neg in RAW, and then convert it to positive in post which I played with and found I did not need that latitude because the adjustments required were either unnecessary or very slight. Obviously, if you were using the slide adapter and shooting positives to begin with, you have the full range of D850 adjustments at your disposal, but I found no problems with the .jpg output of the neg capture. That said, if I uncover some hero images in this process I will then have them professionally scanned for maximum quality. The ES-2/D850 combo make the tedious task of going through a ton of negs relatively pleasant and faster than anything I have seen offered previously.A slide in the holder prior to sliding into position before making a copy. The original print, copied to slide, is about 75 years old. An English soldier smuggled out a camera and 2 rolls of B&W film when posted to Burma during WW2. Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy.

I can shoot, upload to my PC, and edit in Lightroom to completion an entire roll of film in ten minutes. Scanning that same roll with my scanner takes 45 minutes, and then another frustrating half hour attempting to edit my poor scans in Lightroom. After the film or slides have been scanned, I upload the images to my computer as I would with any digital camera, and edit the shots in Lightroom (Photoshop or whichever preferred editing software works too). I would also need to perform these edits if I had made the scans with a dedicated scanner, but in another win for Nikon’s solution, the images that I’ve made with my Nikon Z are infinitely more editable. I can create far more balanced and refined photos with the ES-2 system than I ever could with my scanner, and I’m further afforded greater creative control. I used ISO 100 for all the digitising I did as this ensures high-quality results, however, film grain and texture is evident in all my images. That’s not the adapter’s nor the camera’s fault, it’s just a feature of the film. Sample ImagesThe D850 also generally handled the white balance well in its Natural Light Auto white balance setting, but naturally, colour negatives required some post-capture work to compensate for their brown base colour. Digressing slightly the ES-2 is a "sliding tube" with a moderately variable length - to allow for some cropping - either intended or because a slide mount is a little smaller than 24x36mm. Nikon has used a mixture of plastic and metal for the ES-2’s construction and this ensures it’s lightweight but has a good-quality feel. Setting up the ES-2 is simple. In my use case, I attach the adapter ring to my lens, the ES-2 to my adapter ring, load a film strip into the film strip holder or a slide into the slide holder, set the camera to Aperture Priority, set the aperture to f/5.6 or f/8, point the camera at a light source, and shoot. The lens automatically focuses at a 1:1 reproduction ratio (true macro) and a photo of my negative or slide is made.

While the negative digitizer is very useful, there are a number of features with which it can’t be used. If you have any of the features that disable live view selected, and you press the i button to select Negative digitizer, you will see it grayed out. Early next morning (being of sounder mind) I ruminate over coffee that there must be a better way to scan film. Because scanning film is awful. It is quite literally the worst part of shooting film. Given that your subject is a finished photograph, it is important that settings be adjusted so that its colors and tones can accurately be converted to digital. Colors and tones can be regulated using Picture Controls, and exposure modified appropriately by adjustments to metering mode and exposure compensation. Effective use can also be made of white balance in compensating for the light source. Choosing NEF (RAW) format lets you use NEF (RAW) processing for precise adjustments to white balance and Picture Controls after shooting. Exposure must however be tuned before shooting, regardless of the option selected for image quality. The description that follows provides settings for recording JPEG or TIFF pictures for immediate use. Recommended settings: Turning first to white balance, choose Keep white (reduce warm colors) for slides featuring subjects that vary widely in color and brightness. Keep white (reduce warm colors) may not however have the desired results if the slide is dominated by a single color (as when the subject is a blue sky or a green field); better results can often be achieved by selecting Preset manual and measuring white balance without the slide inserted. Try Keep white (reduce warm colors) first, switching to Preset manual if you aren’t satisfied with the result.
