About this deal

Whilst head collars can help with training your dog, they are not a substitute. This is something that all responsible dog owners should do to ensure that your dog becomes a responsible canine citizen and is welcomed by other dogs and owners.

The Canny Collar is a training aid used by Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Dogs Trust and the RSPCA in the UK.An extra benefit of this design is that your dog cannot get their paw onto the leash and pull the head collar over their head. Dog trainer Susan Garrett is very clear that a head collar is not a ‘set it and forget it’ device.. You cannot just fit it and then absent-mindedly walk your dog down the road. Because the Canny Collar fastens behind the head and not under the chin, your dog cannot lift her paw over her lead and pull the collar off her head. Even if she manages to get a claw into the slip line and pull it off her nose, your lead is still secured to the D rings and so she cannot escape. There is no need to remove the Canny Collar when you let your dog off lead. Simply use the carabiner clips included with each collar to fasten the slip line webbing under your dog’s chin by first crossing the ends behind her head as per the fitting and using instructions.

The first time you put the nose band over your dog's nose, he may resist it and try to paw it off his face. Any head halter will cause this reaction for some dogs. It is similar to the feeling we have when wearing a wristwatch for the first time - some dogs are simply not used to it. If your dog reacts this way, try desensitizing him first by introducing the collar slowly, then building up to going for a walk. Put the Canny Collar on and go for a walk immediately. Keep your lead short but loose when walking and aim to have your dog in the 'heel' position. Using a shorter lead will make this easier, around 120cm length is ideal. Give him plenty of vocal praise when he begins walking well. Whilst the Canny Collar is designed to enable your dog to stroll well on a free lead, an excessive amount of lead may permit the slip line to return off your dog’s nose even as strolling. There is a just-right rationalization here to find out how to restrict this. Letting out too much lead defeats the object of the Canny Collar which is to stop your dog from pulling out in front of you and to have him stroll properly with your aid. As a result, we don’t recommend that the Canny Collar be used with a Flexi or extendable lead.Your lead attaches to the D rings on the slip line. This works independently of the collar, giving you a direct connection to your dog’s ‘steering’. A head collar is an effective training aid which can speed up the time it takes to train your dog to walk politely" Your dog soon learns that by not pulling ahead, the walk is more comfortable for you both . You can positively reinforce the experience with vocal praise and/or her favourite treat. Starting your puppy training with a head collar is a great way to get off on the right foot. We wouldn't expect a baby or toddler to adapt to a new experience immediately and it is the same with our dogs. Start slowly and patiently. A head collar is not a device that can help with more serious behavioral issues encountered when walking your dog"

Once you begin to get some control/acceptance, then try using the collar to control as per the instructions to stop pulling. Without the hard, initial & tiring (for you both!) pulling, you should be able to apply pressure when he does pull and release when he stops. For most dogs, yes. A head collar helps dogs to learn good walking habits. This works for young pups and older dogs whose training to date may have been been limited. The Canny Collar works using the recommended 'pressure and release' system. If your dog pulls on the leash, she will feel pressure on the bridge of her nose. When she doesn't pull, there is no pressure. If the collar was in a fixed position, there would be (at least some) continual pressure which means no actual training is taking place and your head collar is working more like a restraint. Your dog will only walk well on a loose lead and this is what we are looking to achieve. When you have a very persistent puller, often it is best to try not to control them immediately with the collar, but to get them used to wearing it and give them plenty of vocal praise when they begin to walk without trying to remove it and when they are behind you. The exercise described above is intended to take away the worst of the initial pulling but should only be done in bursts of three or four minutes maximum as it will be both physically and mentally demanding for both of you.
