About this deal

Like Codenames, Wavelength can have periods of downtime, but it's worth it for the conversation in-between. Chose which team will start the game. The team that goes first keeps their head token in the zero slot. The other team moves their head token to the one point space. The objective of Wavelength is to give your teammates a clue allowing them to accurately predict where to target on a spectrum. The team that does the best job at this over a number of rounds, wins the game. Setup for Wavelength

Hot or cold. Soft or hard. Wizard or…not a wizard? Work together to decide where your clue falls on the spectrum – and win by reading your friends’ minds. After the clue has been given the team will discuss where they think the bullseye may be located and turns the dial accordingly. The closer to the centre the team manages to guess, the more points will they score! Game Components Then insert the 3 tokens-the "heads" and guessing piece-into their various slots. The diagram on the left shows where everything goes. The team that goes first starts at O points. The team that goes second starts at 1 point. We call the teams Left Brain and Right Brain, but you can call yourselves anything you like. Once both teams have finalized their guess, the Psychic reveals the location of the target by opening the screen. It’s as simple as that. The novelty of the game, however, comes from the diversity in the word cards. Some are straightforward, fairly obvious, unambiguous (such as dark/light). However, some are possibly more subjective, such as sport/game or smells good/smells bad. At the start of the game, the active team chooses one player to become the psychic (clue giver). This changes from player to player. The clue giver draws a card from the wavelength cards. Each of these cards has two sides which have two opposing concepts. He or she chooses one of the cards to use and places it in the presence of all to see. Give a clue: Look at where the target's center is located spatially along the visible area of the wheel. Now think of a clue that is conceptually where the target is located ON THE SPECTRUM between the two concepts on your card. Rules for how to give clues can be found later in this book.

The opposing team then tries to decide if the actual position on the scale is higher or lower than that proposed by the active team. Points are awarded for accuracy (two to four) and the opposing team are awarded a point if their higher/lower decision was correct. The first team to ten points wins. Ever wanted to be part of a game show? Ever wanted to play a team-based board game with a great prop centre-piece? Look no further, Wavelength may be the game for you. Wavelength is a team game where you must crank a big dial in the middle of the table to try and work out where, between two sides of a scale, a clue fits. One player from the active team-the Psychic-knows where the target is, but can only give a clue ON THE SPECTRUM between two opposing concepts. After that, their team- mates have to guess where the target is.Open the screen: Using the plastic handle, open the screen and look at where the target is located. You should always open the screen COMPLETELY, even if you can see the target with it partially open: otherwise, players watching you will be able to guess the general target location. The other team analyses where the other team placed the dial compared to the clue and the wavelength card. They will need to decide if they think the center of the target (the four point section) is to the left or right of the position of the dial. The players can discuss before making a decision. When they have decided they will place the guess marker in the slot to the left or right of the wavelength card. The Psychic’s team has chosen their location for the dial. The other team now has to choose if they think the target is to the left or right of the dial. The team has chosen to place the guessing token on the right side because they think the target is to the right of the dial. Scoring in Wavelength In games of Wavelength, two teams will take it in turns to rotate the dial to where they think a bullseye may be located on a spectrum. One player on each team will take on the role of the psychic who will know where the bullseye is. They will draw a card that has a pair of binaries on it, for example Job – Career and Sad Song – Happy Song. The Psychic will then provide a clue as to roughly where the bullseye is located using those two binaries. After the Psychic gives their clue, it's up to the rest of their team to READING THEIR MIND and turn the dial as close to the center of the target area as they can. The psychic must in no way communicate with his team members or make any facial expressions after he has given the clue. The Team phase

After the psychic has given the clue, the active team discusses among themselves, with the goal of knowing where to turn the dial. They will choose where to place the dial. Left/Right phase Place the card in the slot in front of the device, with your chosen side facing forward, and read the card text so both teams can hear. First there's this big contraption. It's a plastic wheel on a post that you sit upright in the bottom of the box. Take a look at one of the pictures because it's a dandy. You give the wheel a spin or two and then open this little viewing slot. You see, the face of the wheel is purposely obscured, hiding the location of a scoring wedge that the guessers are not allowed to view. One of the most startling things about Wavelength is the quality of the components. Rather than designing the game with a cardboard dial, it is made from a nice solid plastic. Everything has a really rigid feel to it – even the box insert, which doubles up as the game “board”. It all feels very well considered and designed. This game has been built to last – which it needs to, as it is going to get a lot of manhandling during play. But not only is it functional – it also looks good, to… glitter infused plastic… remember what I said about gameshows? The box is very distinctive; maybe it’s my age talking, but it is very reminiscent of a 1970s Hawkwind album cover… some of you will know what I mean. Very psychedelic.

Company Details

After you have given the clue, you will close the screen so none of the other players can see the target area on the spectrum. You will then turn the device so your teammates can see it. At this point the Psychic cannot communicate at all until both teams have submitted their guess for the round. If the Psychic gives any other information after this point, the players need to decide what the punishment should be. The game recommends that the Psychic draw a new card and redo the whole Psychic Phase. Giving Clues Everyone thinks out loud and ponders very dumb ideas-all while the other team poisons your brain with bad suggestions. They draw a card that has two opposing concepts on it, like "Underrated - Overrated" or "Hot - Cold". Wavelength is a straightforward game to play. Players are assigned to two teams. One player on one of the teams is presented with a card, on which two dichotomous extremes are written, e.g. dark - light. The “active” player is shown a randomised position on a sliding dial - let’s imagine that the position is near, but not at the very end of, the “dark” end of the scale. They have to come up with a word which matches that position on the scale - they may choose “twilight”, or “Deadpool”. The rest of the team then have to guess where on the scale they think that word belongs.

The closer to the center of the target, the more points your team scores! (The other team also gets a chance to score). For example, if I am giving a clue using the word an old coin. Using the adjective extremely to qualify the clue is giving away too much. Benefits of playing the wavelength board game If the current team scored four points in the previous round, they have a chance to play again in the next round. If the team scored four points and is still behind the other team, they will get to play the next round as well. A new player will be chosen as the Psychic for the next round though. Winning WavelengthWhen you have played all of the chosen wavelength cards, the game will end. You will then compare your score to the chart below to see how well you did.
